What to eat when you feel full quickly on Mounjaro (tirzepatide) or Wegovy (semaglutide) is mostly a question of order: eat the protein on the plate first, then vegetables, then a little higher fibre starch. Drink plenty of fluids through the day, more so if you are being sick. Fullness is part of how both medicines work, so the aim is to make a smaller meal count. The trials of these medicines do not yet say how many meals a day is right.

Why do I feel full after a few bites on a weight loss injection?

Because both medicines are built to do it. Mounjaro works partly by giving a sense of fullness, and Wegovy makes people feel fuller and less hungry, so a plate that used to be ordinary can now feel like too much.

The size of the effect has been measured. A meta-analysis in Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome (2026) pooled three trials with 209 adults treated for at least four weeks, and at a lunch where people could eat as much as they liked, those on a GLP-1 or dual agonist medicine ate on average about 271 kcal less than those on placebo.

Feeling sick adds to it. Nausea and vomiting are most common when you first start Mounjaro and fall over time for most people, and in SURMOUNT-1, a 72 week trial of Mounjaro against placebo in 2,539 adults with obesity but without diabetes, the most common adverse events were gastrointestinal, mostly mild to moderate and mostly during dose increases. More on Wegovy side effects.

What to eat when you feel full quickly: what goes first?

Protein goes first. When you stop after a few bites, the bites you have already eaten are the meal, so put the eggs, fish, beans, lentils or chicken at the front of it and leave the extras for the end. The 2026 meta-analysis concludes that structured advice emphasising adequate protein should go alongside these medicines. It sets no gram target, and how much protein you need depends on you rather than on a calculator.

After the protein come vegetables, then a little starch. For the starch, pick the higher fibre or wholegrain kind, such as brown rice or wholewheat pasta. Three small plates that follow that order:

  • Two eggs, a handful of spinach and half a slice of wholemeal toast.
  • Half a tin of mackerel with cucumber and a few spoonfuls of brown rice.
  • A bowl of lentil soup with a small wholemeal roll.
A small plate split into thirds: protein first, then vegetables, then a little higher fibre starchy food.
Illustrative thirds, not measured portions: the protein share is the part to eat first.

Is it a problem if I only manage half a plate?

Not if the half you eat is the right half. Say you are eating around 1,000 kcal a day and manage half your lunch. In studies, people taking GLP-1 medicines ate about 271 kcal less at lunch. On a 1,000 kcal day, that is more than a quarter of your food gone in one sitting which is why the order of a small meal matters more than its size: if the half left on the plate is the chicken or the lentils, the protein from that meal goes with it, and if it is the rice, what goes is mostly starch.

Do protein shakes help when you cannot eat much?

There is no evidence either way. Advice to eat enough protein is backed, but no study looked at a shake, or any product, against ordinary food, so a shake is a practical way to get some in when there is no meal or whole food to hand. Our view on four common ideas:

Feeling sick early on settles with timeSupportedSickness is most common at the start and falls over time for most people.
Eating little while being sick risks dehydrationSupportedBeing sick or having diarrhoea can dehydrate you, so drink plenty of fluids.

So bring a plain record. Write down what you ate and drank on three ordinary days, when you felt full or sick, and your weight at the start and end of the week, because that answers a GP’s questions at a glance.
