Mounjaro hair loss: what the leaflet says and why it happens

A Mounjaro (tirzepatide) KwikPen lies on a beige linen surface beside a small clump of shed brown hair in soft light.

How common hair loss is on Mounjaro, and why losing weight quickly can thin your hair anyway. You’ll also find which tips have anything behind them.

Yes, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and other glp-1 medication can cause hair loss. It is listed as a common side effect for people using it for weight management so it may affect up to 1 in 10 people. In the trials it was mostly mild, and most people recovered while still on treatment. Fast weight loss may play a part as well, and no supplement has been shown to prevent it.

Does Mounjaro cause hair loss?

More hair in the brush is the first thing most people notice.

It can, but for most people it doesn’t. In the weight management trials, hair loss was reported in 4.9% of people taking Mounjaro and 1.0% of people taking a placebo. Picture 100 people on Mounjaro: about 5 notice hair loss, against about 1 in every 100 on the placebo injection. So roughly 4 in every 100 people on Mounjaro had hair loss, and around 95 noticed none at all.

That sits inside the word “common”, which covers anything up to 1 in 10 people. If you are finding more hair in the brush each morning, that is the pattern the trials describe.

Why does hair thin during fast weight loss?

Losing weight quickly is linked to shedding whatever causes the weight loss. A review of 41 studies in 7,044 people found hair loss in 47% after weight loss surgery, far more often than in the Mounjaro trials. Surgery involves no medicine of this kind, so the weight loss itself is likely to be part of the story.

The usual form is telogen effluvium: more hairs than normal stop growing at the same time and then fall out together, so the scalp thins evenly rather than in patches. A review of 24 studies of GLP-1 medicines found Mounjaro most often linked to this kind of shedding, and named rapid weight loss as a possible contributor. The same review says plainly that cause has not been proven yet. That matters, because it means nobody can yet tell you how much of your shedding is the medicine and how much is the pace of weight loss.

One case report describes a man whose hair grew thicker while he lost weight on Mounjaro. A single case can’t show cause in either direction. It is a reminder that hair responds to many things at once.

Do the usual hair loss tips on Mounjaro help?

Most of the tips passed around have no evidence behind them in people taking Mounjaro. Here is where each one stands.

IdeaOur viewWhy
A multivitamin and iron while eating lessNo evidence linked to hair growthThere is no evidence on supplements for hair loss on Mounjaro, and the cause of the shedding is still unclear.
More protein to stop hair fallingNo evidence either wayThere is no evidence on protein and hair loss on Mounjaro, although protein matters on a small appetite for other reasons.
Biotin or hair vitaminsNo evidence either wayThere is no evidence that biotin or hair products help in people taking Mounjaro.
Lowering or spreading out the doseNo evidence either wayThere is no evidence a lower dose prevents shedding, and most people in the trials recovered while staying on treatment. A dose change is your prescriber’s decision.
It comes from fast weight loss, not only the medicineMakes sense, untestedRapid weight loss is a possible contributor, but no study has shown which cause matters more.

Does Mounjaro hair loss grow back, and what helps?

For most people it settles, because most people in the trials recovered while still taking Mounjaro. Shedding on Mounjaro is usually worth giving a few months to settle, with the focus on eating enough, before it is treated as a problem with the medicine.

Eating enough is the part you can change. On a small appetite, every meal has to carry more, so eat the protein first, sip fluids through the afternoon, and leave counting anything until eating feels steadier. There are practical ideas in what to eat when you feel full quickly, and a plain guide to how much protein you need a day.

If you have lowered or stopped Mounjaro and are still shedding, the weight you lost in the months before can still be the cause.
